Looking back on 2018, I can say it was a good year. I learned so much about life, people, relationships (check my favorite blog post on relationships by clicking here), friendships, priorities and most of all about myself. I listed below the lessons that touched me the most and that will help me make 2019 an exceptional year. Don’t get me wrong though- it’s one thing to know and a totally different thing to do. Because if you’re following me closely on It Started With A Haircut, you would know that I’m still struggling with a few things that are listed below.
Lesson#1: People will walk in and out of your life. They could hurt you, betray your trust and break your heart, but that shouldn’t stop you from making new friends and going into new relationships. Don’t punish yourself for someone else’s mistake.
Lesson#2: Bad habits come in threes. It’s tempting to get immersed in a bad habit and to pretend it’s not causing that much damage, but truth is- it’s dragging you into more damage than you know.
Lesson#3: Your family and close friends are and should be your priority. These are your people. Taking them for granted for any reason or anyone is just not acceptable. Don’t do that.
Lesson#4: Relationships are hard work. It takes patience, sacrifice, respect and love- an insane amount of love to make it work. If you’re not ready to put in the work, please don’t expect a miracle.
Lesson#5: Be kind to people even when you’re not feeling great- you have no idea what kind of magic it brings to life.
Lesson#6: Don’t judge people for how they act on a bad day- How would you know?- that’s exactly the point. You won’t know, so give them the benefit of the doubt.
Lesson#7: Don’t force your love, care, company or problems on people just because you could relate to them. They need to be ready to accept whatever it is you’re sharing. If they’re not, don’t force it and create unnecessary drama that we could all live without.
Lesson#8: Make plans and follow through on them. If you’re not determined to follow through, don’t waste your time and everyone else’s time- making plans and complaining they don’t work.
Lesson#9: Ask for help when you need it. No matter how close you are to someone, they cannot necessarily guess what you need at any point in time.
Lesson#10: Don’t chase after something just because everyone else wants it. It’s ok not to want what everyone else wants, it could be just not your kind of thing.
Lesson#11: Love yourself with all the flaws, scars and mistakes- try to understand that without all of this, you wouldn’t be where you are or who you are today- I’m guessing a cool person if you got all the way down to lesson#11.
Lesson#12: Forgive people for things that tick you off, but are really not that important in the bigger scheme of things- you know what those are! All those little things that hurt your big ego do not qualify as serious issues so please get over it and relax.
Lesson#13: Keep busy with a healthy hobby or little project if you’re going through a rough patch. This should curb most of the self-destructive tendencies if you’re anything like me.
I had my good and bad moments like everyone else in the past 12 months. I list a few of the good things to myself every morning- no matter how little or insignificant they might seem to be. I’m enjoying all these little things in life because we can create so many of those everyday instead of waiting for a fairytale to unfold and make it all better.
